NATIONAL CHARTER SCHOOLS WEEK
2024
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, charter schools are public schools that increase learning opportunities for all students and provide parents and students with expanded opportunities within the public school system; and
WHEREAS, there are 211 charter schools operating in North Carolina, serving over 140,000 students; and
WHEREAS, charter schools seek to improve student learning by encouraging the development of innovative teaching methods and providing new professional opportunities for teachers; and
WHEREAS, many charter schools are designed to serve children from traditionally underserved communities; and
WHEREAS, charter schools play an integral role in North Carolina’s public education system, the communities in which they operate, the families they serve, and the students’ lives they impact; and
WHEREAS, charter schools encourage community and parental involvement in the education of our youth; and
WHEREAS, charter schools offer a variety of learning environments and emphases, including college-preparedness, career technical education, arts, and STEM; and
WHEREAS, Governor Roy Cooper has declared 2024 as the “Year of Public Schools” in North Carolina, and the State of North Carolina joins the North Carolina Association for Public Charter Schools in celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of charter schools to public education;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 12 – 18, 2024, as “NATIONAL CHARTER SCHOOLS WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
