WHEREAS, swimming and other aquatic activities can significantly contribute to good physical and mental health and enhance quality of life; and

WHEREAS, education on proper water safety measures plays an essential role in preventing drownings and recreational water-related injuries; and

WHEREAS, the recreational water industry, as represented by the organizations involved in the National Water Safety Month Coalition, is committed to developing safe swimming facilities, aquatic programs, and home pools and spas, providing healthy places to exercise, learn, and grow, and contributing to the quality of life in our communities; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes the pool, spa, waterpark, recreation, and parks industries for their ongoing efforts and initiatives to educate the public on pool and spa safety issues; and

WHEREAS, Water Safety Month is an opportunity to increase awareness of the importance of communicating water safety rules and programs to families and individuals of all ages, whether owners of private pools, users of public swimming facilities, or visitors to waterparks;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May, 2023, as “NATIONAL WATER SAFETY MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
