WHEREAS, North Carolina has set a statewide myFutureNC goal to increase the number of individuals attaining a high-quality credential or postsecondary degree to two million people by 2030; and

WHEREAS, the 2016 United States Census reports that only 27.9 percent of North Carolina's estimated

6.6 million working-age adults (25-64 years of age) hold a two-year or four-year college degree; and

WHEREAS, the Lumina Foundation reports that increased degree attainment improves health, lowers the crime rate, and helps to create publicly engaged individuals who are both globally aware and participate in the civic and democratic process; and

WHEREAS, College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC) provides a comprehensive web portal where students can plan, apply, and pay for college in North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, during the week of October 18 - 22, 2021, all North Carolina colleges and universities will accept the College Board fee waiver for students with a demonstrated financial need, helping to ensure that no student is deprived of the opportunity to pursue admission to the institution(s) of his or her choice due to financial hardship; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages students to visit College Foundation of North Carolina's web site, CFNC.org, and apply to universities and colleges because applying is the first step toward earning the degrees that will help them succeed in today's global economy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October, 2021, as “NORTH CAROLINA COUNTDOWN TO COLLEGE MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
