WHEREAS, October is National SIDS, Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month with the focus to generate public understanding, compassion, and support for medical research; and
WHEREAS, each year, approximately one million pregnancies in the United States end in miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of a newborn baby; and
WHEREAS, each year, more than 25,000 families experience a stillbirth; and
WHEREAS, SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, remains the leading cause of death for infants one month to one year of age; and
WHEREAS, it is a great tragedy to lose a child; and
WHEREAS, raised awareness may encourage increased funding of medical research, emotional support programs, and supply current information to the general public, particularly new and expectant parents and health care providers; and
WHEREAS, raised awareness in North Carolina may also work to unite parents, caregivers, researchers with government, business and community service organizations in a nationwide movement to advance the support for bereaved families and hasten the elimination of SIDS, stillbirth, miscarriage and other causes of sudden infant death;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October, 2021, as “NORTH CAROLINA SIDS PREGNANCY AND INFANT LOSS AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizen
