Occupational Safety And Health Week
2025
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, according to the United States Department of Labor’s most recent study, 5,283 people died from job-related incidents, a 5.7 percent increase from the previous year, with one worker dying every 96 minutes from a work-related injury, and millions more people suffering occupational injuries and illnesses; and
Whereas, common causes of occupational fatalities include falls, motor vehicle accidents, exposure to harmful substances or environment, fires, and explosions; and
Whereas, construction has the most fatalities among all industry sectors and is the highest sector going back to 2011; slip, trip, and falls accounted for 39.2 percent of all construction fatalities; and
Whereas, during North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) members will distribute important information to small businesses on how effective occupational safety and health efforts can help them move their businesses forward, contribute positively to the bottom line, and help protect their employees and property from risk; and
Whereas, occupational injuries, health care, and illnesses cost businesses across the nation billions of dollars and can cost individuals and employees their health, livelihoods, and well-being; and
Whereas, safer organizations enjoy increased productivity, higher employee satisfaction, and a better reputation while recording less lost time and lower workers' compensation and health care costs; and
Whereas, occupational safety, health, and environmental professionals work around the clock so that millions of people can leave their workplace injury and illness-free to return home to their families and friends each day; and
Whereas, during the week of May 4-10, ASSP members, OSHA, and corporate/association partners will mobilize in an effort to increase employer, employee, and public awareness of the importance of safety at work, to raise awareness of the role and contribution of safety, health, and environmental professionals, to encourage safe work practices, to provide small businesses with occupational safety resources, and to help companies and organizations enhance their workplace safety efforts;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 4-10, 2025, as “Occupational Safety And Health Week” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this sixth day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-fifth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.
