OLDER AMERICANS MONTH
2024
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina strives to ensure that our state is a great place for people to grow older while thriving within families, neighborhoods, and communities; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina is routinely recognized as one of the best states for retirees, ranking 9th in the nation for number of people aged 65 and older; currently, one in six North Carolinians is aged 65 or older, and by 2025 it will be one in five; and
WHEREAS, the United States Administration for Community Living has designated the 2024 theme for Older Americans Month as Powered by Connection, emphasizing the profound impact of meaningful interactions and social connection on the well-being and health of older adults in our community; and
WHEREAS, older Americans improve our communities through intergenerational relationships, community service, civic engagement, and many other activities; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina must ensure that its older residents have the resources and support needed to stay involved in their communities, reflecting a commitment to inclusivity and connectedness; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging and the Senior Tar Heel Legislature advocate for older adults and promote awareness of issues surrounding aging; and
WHEREAS, Executive Order 280 was signed on May 2, 2023, establishing North Carolina’s commitment to building an age-friendly state and ordering the Department of Health and Human Services to implement a planning process to develop a multisector plan for aging in North Carolina and directing all cabinet agencies to cooperate with implementation of this Executive Order;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May, 2024, as “OLDER AMERICANS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
