WHEREAS, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded November 17, 1911, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., by three undergraduate students, with the assistance of their faculty advisor; and
WHEREAS, from the initials of the Greek phrase meaning "friendship is essential to the soul," the name Omega Psi Phi was derived, and the phrase was selected as the motto; Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift were adopted as cardinal principals; and
WHEREAS, the Phi Chi Chapter commemorates its 65th Anniversary of brotherhood and service as Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. celebrates its rich 110-year legacy of providing dynamic social action programming to underserved youth and families; and
WHEREAS, Phi Chi's accolades include being named Sixth District Small Graduate Chapter of the Year for four consecutive years (2018-2021), Sixth District Small Graduate, Social Action Chapter of the Year for three consecutive years (2019-2021), International Small Graduate Chapter of the Year (2018) and International Small Graduate Social Action Chapter of the Year (2019); and
WHEREAS, the Phi Chi Chapter seeks to continue to occupy a progressive, cooperative, and constructive place in the civic and political life of the Cabarrus County community;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 17, 2021, as “PHI CHI DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
