In Recognition Of

The 106 Lives Lost During Hurricane Helene

2025

By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina

A Proclamation

Whereas, on September 27, 2024, Hurricane Helene hit the western part of the state of North Carolina, causing unprecedented damage and displacing thousands of individuals, families, and businesses; and

Whereas, more than 690 ambulances, 850 law enforcement officers, 1,000 firefighters, and 1,850 responders from 39 states responded to assist western North Carolina; and

Whereas, law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical services, emergency management, hazardous materials responders, medical examiners, and other first responders demonstrated exceptional professionalism and bravery; and

Whereas, an incredible number of dedicated volunteers uprooted their lives to help people get food, clothing, shelter, energy, and other critical support services; and

Whereas, North Carolina lost 106 lives during and in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene – parents, spouses, children, friends – and we must recognize the devastating impact on their loved ones, whose lives have been forever altered; and

Whereas, the people who have suffered from this storm need assistance from their federal and state governments to rebuild and recover;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim March 27, 2025, as “In Recognition Of The 106 Lives Lost During Hurricane Helene” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-sixth day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-fifth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.
