2024

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, on or about October 25, 1774, fifty-one North Carolinian women signed a nonimportation agreement that later became known as the Edenton Tea Party Resolves; and

WHEREAS, the signers of the Edenton Tea Party Resolves declared themselves in support of a series of resolutions recently passed by the First North Carolina Provincial Congress to protest a series of restrictive laws the British Parliament had enacted known as the Intolerable Acts; and

WHEREAS, the signers of the Edenton Resolves agreed to boycott many goods from the East India Company, including tea, until Great Britain addressed American colonists’ grievances; and

WHEREAS, the Edenton Tea Party Resolves, along with the signers’ names, were later published in newspapers such as the Virginia Gazette on November 3, 1774 and in the Morning Chronicle and London Advertiser on January 16, 1775; and

WHEREAS, many of the signers went on to become staunch supporters of the Patriot cause during the American Revolution, the first battles of which broke out less than six months after the signing of the resolves; and

WHEREAS, the resolves demonstrated how colonists, both male and female, used boycotts and other forms of anti-consumerism to protest the policy of taxation without representation and to effect political change; and

WHEREAS, the drafting and signing of the Edenton Tea Party Resolves was one of the earliest known pieces of women’s political activism within the thirteen colonies; and

WHEREAS, October 25, 2024, marks the 250th anniversary of the first known date associated with the Edenton Tea Party Resolves;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 25, 2024, as “IN RECOGNITION OF THE 250th ANNIVERSARY OF THE EDENTON TEA PARTY RESOLVES” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
