THE 250th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST SITTING OF THE NORTH CAROLINA PROVINCIAL CONGRESS

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, today marks the 250th anniversary of the first sitting of the North Carolina Provincial Congress; and

WHEREAS, on August 25, 1774, 71 delegates from 35 North Carolina counties convened in New Bern in defiance of British orders; and

WHEREAS, the Congress passed a series of resolutions supporting the Massachusetts colonists, who, following the Boston Tea Party, were subject to a series of restrictive laws known as the Intolerable Acts; and

WHEREAS, the delegates of the First North Carolina Provincial Congress agreed to boycott many goods from the East India Company, including tea, until Great Britain addressed American colonists’ grievances; and

WHEREAS, the Provincial Congress declared North Carolina in support of the First Continental Congress held in Philadelphia and elected the colony’s three delegates, two of whom later signed the Declaration of Independence; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina’s Provincial Congress was the first of its kind in any of the thirteen colonies; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina’s Provincial Congress fostered cooperation amongst Britain’s colonies throughout North America; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina’s Provincial Congress laid the foundation for the Patriot government of the eventual State of North Carolina, and the North Carolina General Assembly;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 25, 2024, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF THE 250th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST SITTING OF THE NORTH CAROLINA PROVINCIAL CONGRESS” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
