THE 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE OCEAN CITY BEACH COMMUNITY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Ocean City Beach was established in 1949 as a pioneering community during a time of segregation, becoming a beacon of resilience, unity, and progress; and

WHEREAS, the community was founded by and for African Americans as a place where their families and other African Americans could own beachfront property, gather, and enjoy recreation in the spirit of freedom and equality; and

WHEREAS, the community has been the site of significant cultural, social, and civil rights contributions in the broad struggle for equality and justice within the United States, fostering a strong sense of identity and purpose while serving as a sanctuary of heritage and pride among its residents and visitors for 75 years; and

WHEREAS, Ocean City Beach residents have made rich social, cultural, and economic contributions to the fabric of our County and State, showcasing the enduring spirit of innovation and perseverance; and

WHEREAS, the 75th anniversary is a momentous occasion to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and continue to envision a future of growth, unity, and achievement for the Ocean City Beach Community;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim July 5, 2024, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF THE 75th ANNIVERSARY OF THE OCEAN CITY BEACH COMMUNITY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
