IN RECOGNITION OF
THE 85th ANNIVERSARY OF BETA MU LAMBDA CHAPTER OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC.

A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was founded by seven young men – Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy – affectionately known as the "Seven Jewels," on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, who laid a firm foundation for the principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity; and
WHEREAS, 11 visionary, courageous men – Alan D. Rutherford, J. Leslie Smith, Frederick D. White, Troy Johnson, Isaac H. Miller, Jr., Howard W. Miller, James C. Simpson, Hatcher A. Day, Thomas E. Allison, Jr., James L. Hollowell, and Frank A. Toliver – petitioned the national body led by then-General President Charles H. Wesley to establish a local chapter in Salisbury to serve Rowan, Cabarrus, and Iredell counties; the Beta Mu Lambda Chapter was established on August 21, 1939; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Beta Mu Lambda Chapter has a mission to develop leaders and promote brotherhood and academic excellence while working diligently and tirelessly to help correct the educational, economic, political, and social injustices in Rowan, Cabarrus, and Iredell counties through various programs and endeavors that inspire, uplift, and encourage residents to reach their highest potential by living up to the fraternity's goals of Manly Deeds, Scholarship and Love for all Mankind; and
WHEREAS, Beta Mu Lambda embraces the initiatives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., including Go To High School, Go To College, Project Alpha, and A Voteless People Is A Hopeless People, through active involvement in various service projects; and
WHEREAS, Beta Mu Lambda provides service to the community through the Young Pharaohs Mentoring Group, the Annual Heart of Christmas Celebration, Party At The Polls, and Adopt A Highway projects, and has awarded scholarships to high school seniors in the surrounding communities; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina joins the Beta Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in celebrating its 85th chapter anniversary and commends its members for their continuous service to North Carolina and their communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 21, 2024, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF THE 85th ANNIVERSARY OF BETA MU LAMBDA CHAPTER OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC.” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
