WHEREAS, Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System, was founded in 1891, and joined the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association (CIAA) in 1957; and
WHEREAS, ECSU captured two CIAA Tournament Championships during the 2022-2023 season; and
WHEREAS, the Viking women’s volleyball team secured the CIAA Tournament Championship on November 12, 2022 in Salem, Virginia under the leadership of Head Coach David Brooks, with the team taking home several individual and team awards; and
WHEREAS, ECSU student-athlete Elizabeth Kellum received the honor of being named 2022 Tournament Conference Most Valuable Player; and
WHEREAS, the 2022 Vikings’ Volleyball Championship marked the second tournament win for ECSU, the first coming in 2008; and
WHEREAS, the Viking women’s basketball team, under the leadership of Head Coach Tynesha Lewis, made history for ECSU by winning its first-ever CIAA Tournament Championship on February 25, 2023, in Baltimore, Maryland; and
WHEREAS, ECSU student-athlete NyAsia Blango was named 2023 Tournament Conference Most Valuable Player; and
WHEREAS, Elizabeth City State University continues to build a culture of scholarship and excellence both inside and outside the classroom under Dr. Karrie G. Dixon, ECSU’s 12th Chief Executive Officer and 7th Chancellor;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim March 10, 2023, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL AND BASKETBALL TEAMS” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
