WHEREAS, the national Journalism Education Association (JEA), founded in 1924, is celebrating 100 years of supporting student journalists and advisers in North Carolina and nationwide; and
WHEREAS, the Journalism Education Association supports free and responsible scholastic journalism by providing resources and educational opportunities, by promoting professionalism, by encouraging and rewarding student excellence and teacher achievement, and by fostering an atmosphere which encourages diversity and builds unity; and
WHEREAS, the JEA and North Carolina advisers and student journalists actively support and honor the First Amendment in their student publications; and
WHEREAS, February 19 – 23, 2024, has been designated Scholastic Journalism Week throughout the country to celebrate the JEA, along with state advisers, student journalists, and publication programs; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes the Journalism Education Association for 100 years of work on behalf of scholastic journalism and student journalists in our state and across the country;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim February 19, 2024, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF THE JOURNALISM EDUCATION ASSOCIATION CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
