IN RECOGNITION OF
THE LAURINBURG INSTITUTE 120th ANNIVERSARY
2024
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the historic Laurinburg Institute, in Laurinburg, North Carolina, is celebrating its 120th year in operation; and
WHEREAS, the Institute has served for over a century as a beacon of higher learning and opportunity in the Sandhills region of North Carolina and beyond; and
WHEREAS, the Institute has pioneered progress in North Carolina as the first secondary education institute for African American students in Scotland County and surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, the Institute has brought recognition to the State of North Carolina through generations of internationally renowned alumni and works; and
WHEREAS, through its accomplishments since 1904, the Laurinburg Institute has fulfilled its mission of "Deeds Not Words," as well as the North Carolina motto, “To be rather than to seem”;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 14, 2024, as a day “IN RECOGNITION OF THE LAURINBURG INSTITUTE 120th ANNIVERSARY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
