IN RECOGNITION OF
THE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL 95TH ANNIVERSARY
2024
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, since its enactment by the General Assembly on March 18, 1929, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol has provided quality law enforcement services to the people of North Carolina and visitors alike; and
WHEREAS, the first highway patrol training school began on May 20, 1929, at Camp Glenn near Morehead City; and
WHEREAS, of the 42 participants that completed the training, 37 were sworn in as members of the State Highway Patrol on July 1, 1929; and
WHEREAS, today the State Highway Patrol consists of more than 1,500 uniformed troopers and more than 480 civilians; and
WHEREAS, for 95 years, the State Highway Patrol has stayed true to its mission of enforcing the state's motor vehicle laws and reducing the number of collisions on North Carolina's 80,000 miles of roadways; and
WHEREAS, the troopers of the State Highway Patrol have dutifully served the residents of the State of North Carolina despite the danger they often encounter; and
WHEREAS, 70 troopers have lost their lives in the line of duty, including George I. Thompson, the first State Highway Patrol patrolmen killed in North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, on the 95th anniversary, the State of North Carolina recognizes and acknowledges the State Highway Patrol for its invaluable service to the residents of North Carolina;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 12, 2024, as “IN RECOGNITION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY PATROL 95TH ANNIVERSARY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
