SENIOR CENTER MONTH
2024
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, North Carolina has 171 senior centers in 96 counties serving as focal points to provide and coordinate a broad spectrum of services and activities for older adults; and
WHEREAS, through leadership from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Aging, our state’s unique model of senior center programming has created a rich statewide network of senior centers that exemplify excellence in the communities they serve; and
WHEREAS, through a wide array of services, programs, and activities, senior centers empower the older residents of North Carolina to contribute to their own health and well-being, as well as the health and well-being of their fellow residents of all ages and provide opportunity for social connection and engagement; and
WHEREAS, senior centers in North Carolina affirm the dignity, self-worth, and independence of older people by tapping their experiences, skills, and knowledge; providing support, resources, and opportunities aligned with individual preferences and needs; and encouraging continued contributions to the community; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina recognizes the tremendous contributions that senior centers make towards our communities and the outstanding effort of the staff and volunteers who work every day to enhance the well-being of the older members of our communities;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September, 2024, as “SENIOR CENTER MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
