WHEREAS, Tarlov Cyst Disease is classified as a rare disease that forms cerebrospinal fluid-filled sacs in the nerve roots near the base of the spine; these cysts can be present along any part of the spine and can also be symptomatic; and

WHEREAS, Tarlov cysts may be small and asymptomatic, but as they grow they can compress nerves resulting in chronic pain, numbness, altered sensation, and in severe cases, leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, and neurological damage; and

WHEREAS, pain from Tarlov Cyst Disease often mimics other conditions, making this rare disease difficult to diagnose so that many patients presenting these symptoms are often dismissed and/or treated with inappropriate treatments; and

WHEREAS, some insurance companies may even deny patients necessary treatments, including surgery, under misinformed pretenses that they are experimental, unnecessary, or ineffective; and

WHEREAS, there is a need for research on the origins of this disease, non-invasive treatments, and the continued support of neurosurgical procedures, along with education and awareness, especially in the medical community;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 16, 2023, as “TARLOV CYST DISEASE AWARENESS DAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
