WHEREAS, Telugu is one of the oldest surviving ethnic languages, renowned for its rich literature and unique etymological formations, with inscriptions dating back to 400 B.C.E.; and

WHEREAS, Telugu-speaking people originating from the south central region of India are now found in large numbers all over the world, including the state of North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Telugu community plays a crucial role in preserving and enriching Indian heritage and culture, thereby enhancing the diversity of North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Telugu community has made significant contributions to the fields of medicine, pharmaceuticals, information technology, engineering, research, law, business, and academics within the state; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Telugu community has led the effort to build North America’s tallest Hindu temple structure at the Sri Venkateswara Temple of North Carolina in Cary; and

WHEREAS, the late Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, affectionately known as NTR, the legendary Telugu film actor and a former Chief Minister of the combined state of Andhra Pradesh, has left a significant mark on Telugu films, politics, and culture, becoming an iconic figure in all the Telugu-speaking communities; and

WHEREAS, May 28, 2023, marks the birth centenary of NTR, a momentous occasion which affords an opportunity to recognize and honor his multi-dimensional contributions in service of Telugu people; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Telugu community will gather on June 3, 2023, to commemorate and celebrate the life of NTR as Telugu Pride Day and showcase their unique heritage and culture;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 28 – June 3, 2023, as “TELUGU HERITAGE WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
