WHEREAS, Trisomy is a condition characterized by the presence of an additional chromosome to the normal diploid number, a genetic disorder that deeply affects individuals and their families; and

WHEREAS, the most common autosomal abnormalities among newborns are Down syndrome (trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18), and Patau syndrome (trisomy 13); and

WHEREAS, the life of every child is precious, regardless of his or her chromosomal makeup; and

WHEREAS, those managing trisomy pregnancies or raising trisomy-affected children are encouraged to take advantage of local support groups, medical professionals, and online communities that offer education, encouragement, and counseling; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina commends the members of our communities who are working to raise awareness and education for all forms of trisomy, supporting families experiencing trisomy, and enabling people with developmental disabilities to achieve their full potential;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim March, 2024, as “TRISOMY AWARENESS MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
