UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY

BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA

A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, on November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the formation of two battalions of Continental Marines; and

WHEREAS, the United States Marines have served with distinction in every conflict since their founding, holding true to their heritage of "any clime and place"; and

WHEREAS, North Carolina is currently home to approximately 40,000 active-duty Marines and 1,000 reserve Marines that proudly defend the freedoms enjoyed by North Carolinians throughout the state; and

WHEREAS, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point and Marine Corps Air Station New River represent a critical role in the Marine Corps mission on the Eastern seaboard; and

WHEREAS, Montford Point served as the recruit depot for African American Marines when they were allowed to enlist in 1942, representing a major milestone in the Civil Rights movement; and

WHEREAS, today, we seek to honor and celebrate the founding of the United States Marine Corps and wish the Corps a heartfelt happy birthday; and

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages all residents, businesses, organizations, leaders, and elected officials to continue their strong support of the United States Marine Corps and their ongoing mission to ensure our freedom;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 10, 2024, as “UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS BIRTHDAY” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
