WORK ZONE AWARENESS WEEK
2024
BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, highway workers play a critical role in improving North Carolina's infrastructure and supporting economic development; and
WHEREAS, in North Carolina, there were 170 people killed in 33,018 crashes in our roadway work zones between 2019 and 2023; and
WHEREAS, in 2023, 31 people were killed in North Carolina work zones, including three road workers, five pedestrians, and 23 motorists; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina is dedicated to enhancing work zone safety for both the highway worker and the traveling public; and
WHEREAS, safety on our roads is a shared responsibility, and all residents must do their part to keep our highways safe; and
WHEREAS, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) has a dedicated program to educate residents on work zone safety; and
WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina encourages motorists and highway workers to educate themselves about the dangers associated with work zones, and to respect work zone signs, flaggers, and warnings; and
WHEREAS, to reduce fatalities and injuries, DOT encourages drivers to stay alert, turn on their headlights when there is low visibility, do not tailgate, stay in one lane, do not drive distracted, obey posted speed limits, watch for workers, exercise patience, expect the unexpected, and to remember that all North Carolina residents play a role in work zone safety;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ROY COOPER, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April, 2024, as “WORK ZONE AWARENESS MONTH” and April 9 – 11, 2024, as “WORK ZONE AWARENESS WEEK” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
