Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month
2025
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating disease that begins 20 years or more before memory loss and other symptoms develop, and this disease affects more than 7.2 million adults in the United States age 65 and older, a number that is expected to grow significantly in the coming decades; and
Whereas, in North Carolina, more than 211,000 people live with dementia and more than 381,000 caregivers provide 739 million hours of unpaid care at a value of $13 billion; and
Whereas, Alzheimer’s is a progressive degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia, causing deterioration of memory and thinking and erosion of judgment and reasoning abilities and affecting behaviors, emotions, and the ability to care for oneself; and
Whereas, 11.6 percent of North Carolina adults over 65 have Alzheimer’s disease; and
Whereas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Alzheimer’s is the seventh leading cause of death for American adults and the only cause in the top seven that has no prevention or cure; and
Whereas, the workforce needed to support people with Alzheimer’s disease is insufficient; North Carolina has 253 geriatricians as of 2021 and needs a 61 percent increase to meet 2050 demand, and the state has 62,750 home health and personal care aides as of 2022 and needs a 23 percent increase to meet 2050 demand; and
Whereas, the people of North Carolina can support people, families, friends, and caregivers who are impacted by Alzheimer’s disease by promoting research to find a cause and cure and by advocating for educational programs and support services in our communities; and
Whereas, the state of North Carolina joins interested agencies and organizations in commemorating those who have passed and in honoring those living with Alzheimer’s disease, as well as their dedicated caregivers, at annual Candlelight Reflections ceremonies across the state during November and throughout the year;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim November 2025 as “Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all citizens.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-first day of October in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-fifth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
