Americans With Disabilities Act Day
2025
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990, establishing a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination to ensure the civil rights of people with disabilities; and
Whereas, the passage of the ADA was the culmination of decades of advocacy, community organizing, and activism by thousands of Americans who challenged the barriers that excluded and segregated people with disabilities from full participation and inclusion in community life; and
Whereas, the ADA has expanded opportunities for Americans with disabilities by reducing barriers, changing perceptions, and increasing opportunities for full participation and inclusion in community life; and
Whereas, for the one in five people born with or who will acquire a disability during their lifetime, the ADA establishes the expectation that they will be able to fully participate in our society and economy while contributing their many talents and skills; and
Whereas, the State of North Carolina has taken great strides toward achieving the promise of the ADA since its enactment and renews its commitment to eliminating barriers to inclusion and full participation in our communities and economy; and
Whereas, our state and nation commemorate the ADA to celebrate the progress that has been made and to recognize that the struggle for equal access and inclusion is ongoing;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim July 26, 2025, as “Americans With Disabilities Act Day” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this first day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-fifth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.
