Assistive Technology Awareness Month

2026

By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina

A Proclamation

Whereas, people of all ages who have disabilities in North Carolina may need assistive technology devices and services to live independently and participate fully in home and community life; and

Whereas, assistive technology means any item, device, or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities and may include low-tech tools, like adaptive utensils for people with limited dexterity and communication boards that help people with limited verbal skills express themselves, as well as high-tech devices, including environmental control systems and power wheelchairs; and

Whereas, the Assistive Technology Act, reauthorized by the U.S. Congress in 2022, supports the promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act by providing funding to U.S. states and territories to expand the availability of and access to assistive technology devices, services, and financing options, helping individuals with disabilities and their families learn about and obtain the equipment they need; and

Whereas, the 10-year impact of North Carolina’s Assistive Technology Program includes providing device demonstrations, short-term loans, training, education, and related services to more than 115,000 individuals and garnering almost $1 million in savings on the purchase of assistive technology through device reutilization and financing activities; and

Whereas, increasing the availability and awareness of and improving access to assistive technology in North Carolina will expand opportunities for people with disabilities and older adults to live, learn, work, and play in their communities of choice;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 2026 as “Assistive Technology Awareness Month” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
