A Proclamation
Whereas, cancer is the second-leading cause of death in North Carolina with 20,927 cancer-related deaths recorded in 2023 and 78,483 new cancer cases diagnosed; and
Whereas, cancer registrars, also known as Oncology Data Specialists, are data information specialists who capture a complete history, diagnosis, treatment, and health status for every cancer patient in North Carolina and the United States; and
Whereas, information gathered and curated by Oncology Data Specialists in North Carolina is reported by law to the North Carolina Central Cancer Registry and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Program of Cancer Registries to assess the cancer burden throughout North Carolina; and
Whereas, curated data provides essential information to researchers, health care providers, and public health officials to conduct research; better monitor cancer incidence; advance cancer treatments, cancer prevention, and early detection; measure outcomes; and improve survivorship; and
Whereas, Oncology Data Specialists are at the heart of our state’s cancer surveillance system, curating the data the informs cancer research and public health program planning;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 6 – 10, 2026, as “Cancer Registrars Week” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
