A Proclamation
Whereas, our nation’s longstanding and ongoing experiment in self-governance requires a populace with an understanding of our government and laws; the skills for discussion and working together across difference; and a widespread commitment to the civic strength of our communities; and
Whereas, civic literacy is vital to sustaining and strengthening constitutional democracy in the United States of America, and the practice of democracy must be taught and learned anew by each generation; and
Whereas, the State of North Carolina serves to prepare young people for college, career, and civic life; and
Whereas, Civic Learning Week seeks to unite our communities and highlight the importance of civic literacy, knowledge, skills, and dispositions that provide the foundation for an informed and engaged populace; and
Whereas, North Carolina will continue to commit to the importance of civic learning by providing elementary and secondary school students with positive and engaging civic education opportunities in their classrooms and in their communities; and
Whereas, the State of North Carolina encourages all residents, businesses, organizations, leaders, and elected officials to champion civic learning, thereby increasing civic literacy across our state;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim March 9 – 13, 2026, as “Civic Learning Week” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
