A Proclamation

Whereas, clothing is a basic human necessity, essential not only for protection and comfort but also for dignity; and

Whereas, clothing insecurity – defined as the lack of access to adequate, weather-appropriate, and culturally acceptable clothing – affects children, adults, and families across the state of North Carolina and the United States; and

Whereas, children who experience clothing insecurity often face barriers in school attendance, social engagement, and extracurricular activities, while adults may encounter challenges in securing and maintaining employment, leading to broader cycles of hardship; and

Whereas, local nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and community volunteers throughout North Carolina are actively working to address this critical issue through clothing drives, donation centers, and outreach programs that provide residents with the resources they need; and

Whereas, Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day serves as an opportunity to highlight the importance of clothing access, to raise public awareness of clothing insecurity’s impacts, and to encourage collective action to support individuals and families in need; and

Whereas, the State of North Carolina is committed to building a compassionate, inclusive community where every resident has the tools and resources to thrive, including access to clothing as a basic necessity;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 15, 2026, as “Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this eighth day of September in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fifty-first.
