A Proclamation

Whereas, the State of North Carolina plays a vital role in safeguarding the personal data of all residents and in promoting responsible practices that strengthen individual and collective privacy; and

Whereas, the State of North Carolina strives to strike a balance between privacy, security, technology, and innovation by working with leading technology partners in sectors across the state to serve as engaged and valuable partners in efforts to respect the privacy of all North Carolinians; and

Whereas, data privacy risks continue to evolve, and emerging technologies, including generative artificial intelligence, present new challenges that can expose individuals and organizations to unauthorized data access, misuse, and identity theft; and

Whereas, North Carolina is proud to champion data privacy by joining the National Cybersecurity Alliance, a nonprofit organization that promotes cybersecurity and data protection along with the safe use of data and technology by celebrating with this year’s theme of “Take Control of Your Data”; and

Whereas, the State of North Carolina is committed to advancing strong data privacy standards, promoting transparent and responsible data-handling practices, and expanding a skilled workforce capable of protecting the personal information of residents, businesses, and institutions through the Office of Privacy and Data Protection within the North Carolina Department of Information Technology; and

Whereas, Data Privacy Day will encourage North Carolinians to learn about technology and the tools available to assist them in safeguarding their own privacy, addressing data privacy concerns, and adopting best practices to protect their personal information;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim January 28, 2026, as Data Privacy Dayin North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
