A Proclamation
Whereas, Direct Support Professionals are critical to the delivery of long-term services and supports, helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) lead more independent and fulfilling lives; and
Whereas, these professionals foster strong, trusting relationships with the people they support and their families, grounded in respect, communication, and person-centered care; and
Whereas, Direct Support Professionals provide a broad range of services that assist people in navigating daily life, including support with personal care, employment, community engagement, and other essential activities; and
Whereas, their efforts help ensure that people with I/DD remain connected to their families, neighbors, and communities; and
Whereas, through their dedication and expertise, Direct Support Professionals promote independence, inclusion, and full participation in community life while reducing reliance on institutional care; and
Whereas, most Direct Support Professionals work in home- and community-based settings, and the growing demand for these services underscores the need for continued support and recognition; and
Whereas, the State of North Carolina recognizes the invaluable contributions of Direct Support Professionals and honors their commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals throughout the state;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 6 – 12, 2026, as “Direct Support Professional Recognition Week” in North Carolina and commend its observance.
