A Proclamation

Whereas, Direct Support Professionals are the primary providers of long-term support and services for millions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; and

Whereas, Direct Support Professionals must build a close and trusted relationship with the person they work with and the person’s family; and

Whereas, Direct Support Professionals provide a broad range of support regarding transportation, food preparation, bathing, dressing, employment, and other daily affairs; and

Whereas, Direct Support Professionals provides essential support to help keep a person with intellectual and developmental disabilities connected to his or her family and community; and

Whereas, Direct Support Professionals enable people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live productive lives and are the key to helping them live successfully in their communities, avoiding costly institutional care; and

Whereas, most Direct Support Professionals are employed in home- and community-based settings in the United States, and this trend is projected to increase over the next decade; however, there is a growing national shortage of Direct Support Professionals in our communities; and

Whereas, the State of North Carolina recognizes the importance of this role in the lives of our residents with disabilities and praises the work and service of Direct Support Professionals to the people of our state;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 7 – 13, 2025, as “Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all citizens.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this eighth day of September in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-fifth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.
