A Proclamation

Whereas, more than 1.6 million North Carolinians are facing hunger, with more than 438,000 of those individuals being children; and

Whereas, addressing food insecurity and hunger is a shared responsibility that affects the well-being of all members of our communities; and

Whereas, the Division of Child and Family Well-Being within the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) oversees Food and Nutrition Services and Community Nutrition Services, providing vital nutrition programs that reduce food insecurity and improve access to nutritious foods for children, families and adults; and

Whereas, in summer 2024, more than 1 million children received more than $129 million in SUN Bucks benefits, and last year Food and Nutrition Services outreach reached 5.2 million North Carolinians; and

Whereas, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) programs serve approximately 258,000 women, infants, and children each month, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) supports 3,934 child care and adult care centers, emergency shelters, and after-school programs, providing nutritious meals to more than 118,000 individuals daily; and

Whereas, the nationwide food bank program Feeding America operates from six North Carolina cities and works with hundreds of NC partners to provide nutritious food across our state to families experiencing food insecurity; and

Whereas, federal nutrition programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), SUN Bucks (summer nutrition program for children), National School Breakfast and Lunch Program, and others play critical roles in addressing hunger for children, families, and older adults; and

Whereas, the contributions of our time, talent, advocacy, and resources by individuals and organizations bring us closer to ending food insecurity and ensuring access to nutritious foods for all;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 2025 as Hunger Action Monthand September 9, 2025, as “Hunger Action Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all citizens.
