A Proclamation
Whereas, Law Day is an occasion of public acknowledgment of our nation’s and state’s heritage of justice, liberty, and equality under the law; and
Whereas, the United States Congress has statutorily designated May 1 as the annual day for the commemoration of Law Day; and
Whereas, the American Bar Association has designated the 2026 Law Day theme to be “The Rule of Law and the American Dream”; and
Whereas, we the people of the United States and North Carolina have a duty to ensure that all individuals are equally accountable under the law, fostering trust in our legal community and justice system; and
Whereas, in recognizing the idea that no person is above the law is a cornerstone of our constitutions, our democracy, and the rule of law in North Carolina and the United States; and
Whereas, by upholding equality before the law, we protect the rights and liberties of the people and preserve a free and just society in which all individuals have access to opportunities and can strive toward their dreams; and
Whereas, the North Carolina Bar Association, with approximately 14,300 members, including 3,567 members of its Young Lawyers Division, encourages North Carolina students in grades K through 12 to participate in law-related competitions held in conjunction with the association’s annual Law Day Celebration; and
Whereas, North Carolina and the United States are better places to live because of our strong commitment to and tradition of liberty and justice and the rule of law and because of the contributions of dedicated members of the legal profession; and this year proudly marks the 68th observance of Law Day; and
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2026, as “Law Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-seventh day of April in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
