Local News Day
2026
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, Americans overwhelmingly say local news is the most important and most trusted source of news; and
Whereas, local journalism is a foundational element of a functioning and healthy democracy; and local journalism equips communities for civic engagement and action; and
Whereas, states across the country are joining together to recognize and celebrate the importance of local news on April 9; and
Whereas, North Carolina communities rely on trusted local news for reliable, vetted information, both in daily living and in moments of crisis; and
Whereas, North Carolina is home to hundreds of news and information outlets, the State of North Carolina recognizes the critical importance of local news in many forms;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 9, 2026, as “Local News Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-third day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
