A Proclamation
Whereas, in 2025, the North Carolina Center for Missing Persons recorded 13,195 missing persons reports, including 7,903 reports involving children, 96 percent of whom were safely located and returned; and
Whereas, the North Carolina Center for Missing Persons serves as the state’s central resource for missing children and adults, working in partnership with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and providing training and investigative support statewide; and
Whereas, the Center maintains a comprehensive database, serves as an interstate liaison for missing persons cases, and administers the North Carolina AMBER Alert, Missing Endangered Alert, and Blue Alert systems; and
Whereas, the AMBER Alert system has contributed to the safe recovery of 1,268 children nationwide since its inception, including 14 activations in North Carolina during 2025; and
Whereas, families and communities play a vital role in preventing child abductions through education, awareness, and open communication about safety at home, school, and online; and
Whereas, immediate reporting to law enforcement is critical when a child is missing, as time is a decisive factor in successful recovery; and
Whereas, the North Carolina Center for Missing Persons joins the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children each year in observing National Missing Children’s Day and the National Missing Children’s Poster Contest;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim May 25, 2026, as “Missing Children’s Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
