A Proclamation

Whereas, on February 27, 1776, in the early dawn hours near Moores Creek, North Carolina’s Patriot minutemen and militia confronted and defeated a larger Loyalist force in an effort that would mark the first decisive Patriot victory of the American Revolution in North Carolina; and

Whereas, the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge marked the end of royal authority over North Carolina, inspired widespread support for the Patriot cause, and led directly to North Carolina’s adoption of the Halifax Resolves, the first official call for independence among the colonies; and

Whereas, this historic victory, secured through the courage of the average citizen of North Carolina, shaped the future of both North Carolina and the nation, laying the foundation for the ideals of independence, equality, and freedom that define the American spirit; and

Whereas, the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge stands not only as a testament to the resolve and determination of the Patriot forces but also as an important reminder of the Loyalists – individuals who, took up arms in defense of The Crown, and whose presence in this conflict reflects the deeply personal and often painful divisions that shaped the American Revolution and the birth of our nation;

Whereas, Moores Creek National Battlefield, preserved and protected by the National Park Service, serves as a steward of this important battle’s history and provides opportunities for visitors of all ages to visit and experience this pivotal battlefield of the American Revolution; and

Whereas, February 27, 2026, marks the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge; we encourage all North Carolinians to reflect on our shared past and celebrate those who made the choice to fight against British rule and struggle for a new nation based on democratic self-governance and adherence to the rule of law;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim February 27, 2026, as Moores Creek Bridge Dayin North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.

                                                                           

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-seventh day of January in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
