National Cancer Survivorship Month

2026

By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina

A Proclamation

Whereas, a cancer survivor is defined as anyone living with a history of cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life; and

Whereas, according to North Carolina Central Cancer Registry data, the 2018-to-2022 five-year relative survival rate for all cancers in North Carolina was 65.5 percent, which was slightly lower than the 2017-to-2021 five-year relative survival rate for all cancers of 65.7 percent; and

Whereas, June 7 is National Cancer Survivors Day, a day to celebrate those who have survived, encourage those recently diagnosed, gather families for support, and reach out to the community; and

Whereas, cancer survivors and their families exhibit courage, faith, and strength to undergo the emotional, physical, and financial burdens associated with their disease; and

Whereas, cancer survivors are encouraged to create a survivorship care plan to record their cancer and treatment history, health checkups or follow-up tests needed in the future, and possible long-term effects of their treatments, as well as ideas for staying healthy; and

Whereas, the North Carolina Comprehensive Cancer Program provides cancer survivorship trainings, resources, and tools to health care providers as well as cancer survivors and their caregivers; and

Whereas, residents of rural communities encounter unique challenges in surviving cancer, including greater travel distances due to limited access to health care, and they demonstrate courage and resilience as they confront cancer, serving as a beacon of hope for us all; and

Whereas, the State of North Carolina encourages residents and health care providers to learn how they can further support cancer survivors during all stages of cancer survivorship and offer care, support, and palliative services during their cancer journeys;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 2026 as “National Cancer Survivorship Month” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-sixth day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
