National Homeownership Month

2026

By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina

A Proclamation

Whereas, homeownership is a central part of the American Dream, representing stability, independence, and a foundation for major life decisions, including raising a family, building financial security, and strengthening communities; and

Whereas, while North Carolina’s strong economy continues to attract new residents and create good-paying jobs, the supply of homes for purchase has not kept pace, leaving many families struggling to find an affordable home in the communities where they work; and

Whereas, North Carolina faces a shortage of more than 750,000 homes through 2029, including more than 400,000 homes needed for purchase, at a time when nearly half of all homes listed are priced around $400,000 or more – requiring an income of about $110,000 to keep housing costs affordable for the average family; and

Whereas, too many North Carolinians – including teachers, carpenters, military servicemembers, and other essential workers – cannot afford to buy a home near their jobs, undermining economic mobility and making it harder for families, especially younger North Carolinians, to build stability and wealth; and

Whereas, on May 19, 2026, Governor Josh Stein signed Executive Order No. 36, Increasing Housing Opportunities for All North Carolinians, to launch a coordinated statewide effort to expand housing supply, improve affordability, and establish the state’s first Senior Advisor for Housing Policy to lead the development of statewide housing; and

Whereas, expanding access to homeownership – including starter homes and modestly priced options – is essential to helping North Carolinians build wealth, fostering strong and resilient communities, and ensuring that the benefits of North Carolina’s growth are shared by families across all 100 counties;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 2026 as “National Homeownership Month” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-sixth day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
