A Proclamation

Whereas, driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs remains a leading cause of preventable crashes, injuries, and deaths in the United States; and

Whereas, in North Carolina, impaired driving contributed significantly to vehicle accidents:

·         84 percent of substance-impaired crashes involved alcohol;

·         85 percent of substance-impaired fatal and serious-injury crashes involved alcohol;

·         23 percent of substance-impaired crashes involved drugs; and

·         26 percent of substance-impaired fatalities and serious injuries involved drugs; and

Whereas, every life lost to impaired driving is one life too many, and families across our community continue to suffer the lasting impacts of these preventable tragedies; and

Whereas, raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving is critical to encouraging safe, responsible decisions, such as planning, using designated drivers, taking public transportation, or hiring rideshare services; and

Whereas, law enforcement agencies, prevention coalitions, schools, and advocacy groups across North Carolina are working tirelessly to reduce impaired driving through education, enforcement, and victim support; and

Whereas, designating December to be Driving While Impaired Awareness Month provides an opportunity to remember the lives lost, support survivors and families, and recommit to making our roads safer;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim December 2025 as “National Impaired Driving Prevention Month” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all citizens.
