National Lighthouse Day
2025
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, North Carolina recognizes that National Lighthouse Day is celebrated each year on August 7; and
Whereas, on August 7, 1789, Congress approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers in the United States; and
Whereas, Congress designated August 7 each year as National Lighthouse Day in 1988; and
Whereas, North Carolina’s coast features seven lighthouses that serve as aids to navigation, cultural symbols, vacation spots, places of work, and welcoming beacons for visitors to our state with their unique histories: Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Ocracoke Lighthouse, Cape Lookout Lighthouse, Oak Island Lighthouse, and Old Baldy Lighthouse at Baldhead Island; and
Whereas, North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras Light Station is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States and a National Historic Landmark; and
Whereas, we honor our community members; volunteers; local, state and Federal governments; and non-profit organizations that preserve these powerful symbols of North Carolina’s identity;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 7, 2025, as “National Lighthouse Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all citizens.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-third day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-fifth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.
