A Proclamation

Whereas, for more than 60 years, surgical technology has grown to meet the ever-increasing demand for well-educated, highly skilled, and versatile surgical technologists; and

Whereas, surgical technologists are entrusted with the lives and well-being of patients and provide a critical service during surgical procedures; and

Whereas, more than 100,000 surgical technologists nationwide are integral parts of the surgical teams committed to providing the highest quality of surgical care to patients; and

Whereas, surgical technologists are responsible for the application of sterile and aseptic technique in operating rooms, ensuring that equipment functions properly and facilitating safe and effective conduct during invasive surgical procedures; and

Whereas, surgical technologists strive to prevent life-threatening surgical site infections and maximize patient safety; and

Whereas, Certified Surgical Technologists graduate from accredited programs and receive certification conferred by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting based upon passage of the national examination; and

Whereas, the surgical technologist motto of “Aeger primo,” meaning “The patient first” reflects total commitment to patient safety and advocacy;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 20 – 26, 2026, as “National Surgical Technologists Week” in North Carolina and commend its observance.
