A Proclamation

Whereas, the State of North Carolina recognizes August 24 as North Carolina Hydropower Day to honor hydropower’s longstanding contribution to our state’s economic prosperity and its continuing role in providing reliable, renewable, and affordable electricity while preserving North Carolina’s natural resources; and

Whereas, North Carolina is home to 37 conventional hydropower facilities and one pumped storage hydropower plant, generating nearly 2,000 megawatts of electricity; and

Whereas, hydropower is the second-largest source of renewable electricity in North Carolina, supporting energy and grid reliability for homes, businesses, and industries across the state; and

Whereas, the resilience and reliability of hydropower resources are particularly important to western North Carolina communities as they continue to recover and rebuild from the impacts of Hurricane Helene and strengthen infrastructure for future generations; and

Whereas, the continued modernizations and responsible management of North Carolina’s hydropower facilities and dams support public safety, environmental conservation, workforce development, and technological innovation; and

Whereas, the hydropower industry creates high-quality jobs, supports rural and mountain communities, and contributes to North Carolina’s economic growth and clean energy future; and

Whereas, the State of North Carolina encourages all residents to recognize and celebrate the vital role of hydropower in strengthening our energy security, supporting economic opportunity, enhancing grid reliability, reducing carbon pollution, and preserving our state’s natural resources for future generations;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 24, 2026, as “North Carolina Hydropower Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-first day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fifty-first.
