A Proclamation

Whereas, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States and the  second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the United States and in North Carolina; and

Whereas, in 2026, it is estimated that 10,424 men in North Carolina will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1,329 men will die from this disease; and

Whereas, prostate cancer impacts people of all races and ethnicities, with African Americans experiencing the highest incidence and mortality rates in North Carolina; and

Whereas, men can reduce their risk of prostate cancer by having a healthy lifestyle, being physically active, eating healthy foods, limiting or eliminating their alcohol intake, and knowing their family history of prostate cancer; and

Whereas, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, Comprehensive Cancer Control Program encourages every man to talk with a health care provider to determine whether they should be screened for prostate cancer; and

Whereas, men whose screening resulted in a diagnosis can work with a health care provider to learn more about the disease, determine treatment that considers a quality-of-life balance in accordance with the unique diagnosis, and find support groups and services in the community or online; and

Whereas, the State of North Carolina encourages people to become informed about cancer detection and to raise awareness, promote resources, and advocate support for men and their families affected by prostate cancer in our communities;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 2026 as “Prostate Cancer Awareness Month” in North Carolina and commend its observance.
