In Recognition of
The 250th Anniversary of The Liberty Point Resolves
2025
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, today marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Liberty Point Resolves, a resolution also known as “The Cumberland Association”; and
Whereas, on June 20, 1775, following the recommendations of the First Continental Congress and the Continental Association, fifty-five North Carolinian Patriots from Cumberland County signed an agreement that later became known as the Liberty Point Resolves; and
Whereas, the signers of the Liberty Point Resolves opposed British Parliament’s recent policies, which increased taxes and reduced trade throughout the North American colonies, as well as the British Army’s recent attacks against colonists at the Battles of Lexington and Concord; and
Whereas, the signers of the Liberty Point Resolves declared themselves “ready to sacrifice our lives and fortunes to secure (American) freedom and safety;” and
Whereas, many of the signers went on to become staunch supporters of the Patriot cause during the American Revolution, including Robert Rowan, who served as a Captain at the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge in February 1776, the first battle of the American Revolution in North Carolina; and
Whereas, the resolves demonstrated how colonists came together to publicly declare their solidarity with one another as Patriots and their mutual opposition to British taxation policies, no matter the personal cost; and
Whereas, the drafting and signing of the resolves was one of the earliest known prerevolutionary acts of Patriot resistance against British policy in Cumberland County;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 20, 2025, as “In Recognition of The 250th Anniversary of The Liberty Point Resolves” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-seventh day of May in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-fifth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.
