A Proclamation

Whereas, the mountains of western North Carolina represent one of the most culturally rich, geographically distinct, and environmentally significant regions in the United States, and are breathtakingly beautiful; and

Whereas, the region includes the sovereign Qualla Boundary and the following 24 counties: Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga, Wilkes, Yancey, and Surry; and

Whereas, these communities are home to generations of resilient people, small businesses, artisans, farmers, outdoor stewards, and culture bearers, whose contributions continue to shape the identity and economy of our state; and

Whereas, western North Carolina has demonstrated extraordinary and collaboration and resilience in the wake of Hurricane Helene; and

Whereas, it is appropriate and timely to honor the natural beauty, traditions, innovation, and progress of this treasured mountain region;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim October 2025 as Rediscovering The Mountains Of Nc Monthin North Carolina and commend its observance to all citizens.
