School Library Month
2026
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, school libraries promote literacy, foster an enjoyment of reading, and help students develop the skills they need to access and evaluate information; and
Whereas, school libraries serve as invaluable resources that provide both mirrors and windows for students in our schools, reflecting their own experiences, cultures, and identities while also offering glimpses into the diverse perspectives and realities of others, thereby fostering empathy, understanding, and inclusivity among learners; and
Whereas, school libraries offer educational activities designed to enhance reading motivation, establish the information literacy skills necessary for lifelong learning, and promote competency in new and developing technologies; and
Whereas, the full potential of school libraries is dependent upon certified professional school librarians, whose varied skills support administrators, teachers, and students in effectively engaging a wide range of teaching and learning technologies and information resources; and
Whereas, it is important to recognize school libraries and school librarians for the vital role they play in creating an inclusive and relevant academic environment throughout the state of North Carolina, including the availability of carefully curated school library collections;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 2026 as “School Library Month” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this seventeenth day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
