A Proclamation

Whereas, the Tamil community of North Carolina has made significant contributions to our state’s diverse culture and population, including preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Tamil language; and

Whereas, the Tamil language is widely spoken in India, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and many other communities throughout our nation and world; this language in central to Tamil identity and is recognized as one of the world’s longest-surviving written and spoken languages; and

Whereas, members of North Carolina’s Tamil community are dedicated to preserving Tamil culture in part through language schools designed to educate young people and hope to preserve the Tamil language for generations to come; and

WHEREAS, Tamil is the oldest classical language in the world, with a traceable archeological discovery at Keezhadi, Porunai, and Mayiladumparai civilizations that exceed 5,300 years; and

Whereas, Tamil tradition, language, and heritage have impacted many aspects of the economic, social, and cultural history of our state and nation; and

Whereas, the Federation of Tamil Sangam of North America and the Carolina Tamil Sangam are jointly organizing the FeTNA 38th Tamil Convention in Raleigh, North Carolina with the theme of “Unite by Tamil and Live as Tamils”; and

Whereas, more than 4,000 Tamil scholars, artists, and musicians from all over the world are expected to gather at the Raleigh Convention Center from July 3-July 5; and

Whereas, the State of North Carolina joins in celebrating and in recognizing the Tamil community for its ongoing contributions to our state;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim July 2025, as Tamil Language And Culture Monthin North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
