A Proclamation
Whereas, August 24, 2026, marks the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s declaration of independence, adopted by the Ukrainian Parliament in 1991 and affirmed by the overwhelming support of the Ukrainian people in a national referendum; and
Whereas, throughout their history, the people of Ukraine have demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience, and determination in preserving their language, culture, traditions, and national identity in the face of immense challenges; and
Whereas, since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Ukrainian people have continued to defend their sovereignty, freedom, and democratic future with remarkable perseverance and sacrifice; and
Whereas, Ukraine has demonstrated exceptional innovation and adaptability during a time of war, showcasing the ingenuity, technological capabilities, and unwavering resolve of its people while defending the principles of liberty, democracy, and self-determination; and
Whereas, the people of North Carolina recognize and share these values of freedom, courage, service, and civic responsibility, which form the foundation of strong democratic societies; and
Whereas, North Carolinians have shown steadfast support for the people of Ukraine through providing humanitarian assistance, charitable giving, community engagement, and educational partnerships and by welcoming displaced Ukrainian families into communities across our state; and
Whereas, North Carolina is home to a vibrant and growing Ukrainian-American community whose members enrich the cultural, educational, civic, scientific, and economic life of our state while strengthening the enduring friendship between the United States and Ukraine; and
Whereas, opportunities continue to grow for cultural exchange, educational collaboration, economic cooperation, and people-to-people partnerships between North Carolina and Ukraine, fostering mutual understanding and stronger ties between our communities; and
Whereas, it is fitting to recognize the bravery, sacrifice, innovation, and perseverance of the Ukrainian people and to honor the contributions of Ukrainian Americans who help strengthen our state and nation;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 24, 2026, as “Ukraine Independence Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-sixth day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fifty-first.
