A Proclamation

Whereas, North Carolina commends the many organizations throughout our state that advocate for the rights of women, providing leadership, support, and a collective voice on issues affecting women, including civic engagement, education, economic opportunity, gender-based violence, and access to comprehensive health care; and 

Whereas, in 1971 the United States Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment, and the work to ensure equitable access to the ballot continues today; and 

Whereas, North Carolina continues to invest in data-driven strategies to advance women’s well-being, including the ongoing Status of Women in North Carolina initiative, which will focus its next report on reproductive health and access to care; and 

Whereas, through statewide convenings, including the 2024 conference on the Status of Women, leaders, advocates, and community members help identify solutions, strengthen partnerships, and elevate priorities that continue to inform policy and practice across our state; and 

Whereas, the full and equal participation of women in civic life, leadership, and decision-making strengthens communities, supports economic growth, and is essential to a thriving democracy; and

Whereas, North Carolina joins communities across the nation in reflecting on the importance of gender equality and recommitting to a future where every woman and girl can succeed without barriers;

Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim August 26, 2026, as “Women's Equality Day” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-first day of July in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fifty-first.
