Work Zone Awareness Month
And
Work Zone Awareness Week
2026
By The Governor Of The State Of North Carolina
A Proclamation
Whereas, transportation workers play crucial roles in improving North Carolina’s roads, bridges, and other infrastructure and in supporting economic development; and
Whereas, the work zones, or designated areas where these dedicated people labor, can be dangerous because the zones often feature traffic pattern changes, narrowed or closed lanes, and the presence of construction equipment; and
Whereas, 215 people were killed in 38,900 crashes in North Carolina work zones from 2020 to 2025; and 28 of those people were killed in North Carolina work zones in 2025, including seven workers, eight pedestrians, and 13 motorists; and
Whereas, the State of North Carolina is dedicated to enhancing work zone safety for the people who work on our highways and for the public; however, safety on our roads is a shared responsibility, and all travelers must do their part to keep our highways safe; and
Whereas, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is dedicated to educating people about work zone safety because increased public awareness can help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries; and
Whereas, the NCDOT encourages motorists and transportation workers to educate themselves about the dangers associated with work zones and to respect work zone signs, flaggers, and warnings; and
Whereas, the NCDOT also urges drivers to keep everyone safe, especially in work zones, by staying alert, turning on headlights, never tailgating, avoiding distracted driving, and obeying posted speed limits;
Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 2026 as “Work Zone Awareness Month” and April 20 – 24, 2026, as “Work Zone Awareness Week” in North Carolina and commend its observance to all residents.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this seventeenth day of March in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty-sixth and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and fiftieth.
